BestTop – Career Sharing Session with Master students from School of Accountancy

Many students are struggling to find a career path and direction to fit their academic background.  To help Master students of Accountancy. BestTop mentors were invited to share with the faculty for a career sharing session on 22 October 2015.

With this exclusive partnership, 30 students in Accountancy have separated into 9 groups to interact with mentors from BestTop. During the sharing session, students were given an opportunity to get first-handed insights from mentors working in Auditing, Banking, Investment Firms, Consulting and Advisory.

This sharing session aims to encourage students to understand the daily operations of working professionals and for them to explore prospective career paths available after graduation. Each group of students will take turns to meet with individual mentors for 20 minutes at a time. Upon the sound of the bell, students would have to transfer to the next mentor, until the group finishes the entire batch of 9 mentors.

All in all, it was a fruitful event to many students as they get to enjoy this rare opportunity of extending their network by meeting working professionals with similar academic backgrounds. BestTop would like to extend our appreciation for School of Accountancy, for inviting us for this event.

BestTop Event - “Are you ready to get hired?” - Career Workshop at Curtin University Singapore

On Thursday, 10 September 2015, graduating students at Curtin University Singapore rouged their cheeks for the annual career workshop themed “How to prepare for the career fair/campus requirement”. Alex, a career mentor from BestTop Consulting, was invited to share with the graduating class on specific techniques to create an outstanding first impression at career fair.

During the workshop, Alex highlighted the importance of polishing one’s resume, not just by how does it formatted but by how it is structured in a logical and chronological order, as well as the proper demonstration of confidence and self-promotion in a resume. Other than that, Alex emphasized that “Attitude Matters”. In short, one’s punctuation, politeness, dress code, professionalism and gesture are essential to how an employer view a potential candidate. Without a proper attitude, it may possibly seed a negative impression to oneself to an ideal employer.

At the end of the workshop, Tony, Co-founder of BestTop seized the opportunity to encourage graduating students the network with working professionals. Through networking with seniors, graduating students can get first-handed information on specific job operations and interview tips. Moreover, networking helps extending one’s social circle and prepare for working life from studying.

Followed by a Q&A session, the 2-hour workshop planned seeds for an annual on-campus Career Fair at Curtin on 26 September where students will face hiring managers of a wide range of companies for the first time! After attending the workshop, majority of students showed their determination to get hired by companies!

Seng Yong

I started off as a graduate trainee with British Petroleum (BP) Singapore Pte. Ltd., Integrated Supply and Trading arm of the oil major in 2004, after graduating from NUS Business School. I was subsequently trained to work in the treasury department dealing with hedging and proprietary trading of mainly the FX market (also have mandate to deal with equities and interest rates futures). I left BP in 2015 and co-founded Clover Global Capital Pte. Ltd., proprietary trading financial instruments and also oil related products.

Allen

Allen has extensive experience in financial modeling in his current role in KPMG Advisory. He has previously worked in Deutsche Bank. He holds a Master Degree from Singapore Management University and Bachelor Degree from Northwest University of Politics and Law.

Austen

Austen has 8 years of working experience in banking and more than 6 years of HR career consulting experience in the Banking and Finance space. His previous working experience include private wealth management, relationship management and talent acquisition.

Matthew

Matthew has over 8 years experience in training and development, facilitation, coaching and leadership development, having worked at both Barclays and Morgan Stanley. In addition, he has a wealth of experience in reviewing resumes, conducting interviews, designing and developing graduate assessment centres and defining recruiting strategy. He has worked with C-Suite Executives, Middle Managers, Graduates and Universities in the UK and Singapore, including LBS, Oxford, NTU, SMU and NUS. He holds MBA from NUS.

BestTop X Curtin University Career Talk：How to Get Your First Job in Banking

In the afternoon of 13 May 2015, a career talk with a highly popular topic among locals and foreign students were held at Curtin University Singapore. In partnership with BestTop for the second time, two distinguished speakers invited by BestTop shared their insights on "How to Get Your First Job in Banking?"

Recalling the partnership with Curtin University, it could trace back to a year ago when BestTop was invited to be part of the school's career fair and helped with resume critique. It was one of the best opportunities for BestTop and Career Centre at Curtin University.

Getting back on the career talk. Tony, Doctor of Engineering and Associate at the Royal Bank of Scotland, introduced different type of banks in general and thus gave an overview to students with first-handed information about buy-side/sell-side, operational structure and the trend of financial industry. After that, he focused on the tips on resume and interview. Banking interview is considered one of the most stringent interviews among industries. With a proper way to prepare and handle it, you too are going to Ace it! (Want to know more about resume writing and interview preparation? Look out for BestTop's upcoming career workshop in June!)

The next speaker is Ruby, a master with SMU, ambassador with BestTop and co-founder of UFind. With so many heads, Ruby is capable of handling them well with her outstanding performance and a lively character. Prior to her master study, she had a wide range of internship experiences across banking, consulting and entrepreneurship. With an open-mind, Ruby shared her industry knowledge and personal stories with the audience through a peer-to-peer angle.

The career talk ended with an informal networking session for students and speakers. It was a pretty scene seeing the students actively engaging and seeking advices from Tony and Ruby! The talk was well received by staff and students at the school where Haja, person-in-charge of Career Centre, Curtin University spoke highly of the talk: “Please do pass on my sincere appreciation to Tony and Ruby for taking the time to speak to our students earlier in the week. Over the past two weeks, a group of energetic participants varies from different Universities, Polytechnics and Collages gathered together at BestTop Career Workshop – Banking Industry Special Edition. This workshop marked a step forward for many participants who are uncertain about their career path and broaden their insight in banking industry.

This specific career workshop covered four topics in particular which includes resume writing, behavioral interview, group interview and career planning. Unlike many workshops elsewhere, BestTop invited 4 guest speakers to share hands-on information and first-handed experience with participants. Consultants at BestTop were not limited to present necessary theories. Instead, they encouraged interaction among participants and guest speakers.

BestTop Event: BBQ Career Sharing Session

BestTop kicks off the new year of 2014 by holding a well-received event – BBQ Career Sharing Session. This event, which was the first outdoor event of BestTop, was held on Jan 18th at West Coast Park. It functioned and set out to build an informative networking platform for participants to interact with each other and the working professionals in different industries.

During the event, our experienced BestTop coach introduced practical resume writing skills and interview techniques to help the participants to polish their job application documents. The concise and pinpointed speech sparked off a discussion and Q&A session that stretched on for half an hour.

As the second part of this event, our guest speaker from P&G, auditing firm and GlaxoSmithKline addressed the current employment status in different industries in Singapore. They highlighted several ways to nail down an ideal job and related their personal experience of how they succeeded in the job application process.

After which, we organized an interactive ice-breaking game for participants to introduce themselves to each other within the limit of two minutes. At the end of the event, the participants commented that it was a great opportunity for them to received internal references from the guest speakers. We are sure that all our participants take home with tips and confidence in their upcoming job application.
