Employer Description
The Advanced Digital Sciences Center (ADSC) is a center for research led by faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. ADSC is located at the Fusionopolis research facility in Singapore.
ADSC was established in 2009. Its core funding comes from a significant grant from Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). The University of Illinois and A*STAR had earlier created theA*STAR-University of Illinois Partnership (AUIP), a four-year scholarship for Singaporean Ph.D. students consisting of two years of Ph.D. studies at Illinois and two years at an A*STAR research institute, leading to a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
ADSC's mission is to identify and solve basic research problems with high scientific impact and high potential economic impact, and to help expand the workforce of highly trained IT researchers. These activities will enhance Singapore's position as a hub for cutting-edge research in information technologies, interactive digital media, and adaptive cyber infrastructure, while also facilitating interactions between University of Illinois researchers and research and industry partners in Singapore and Asia.
Responsibilities
Internships are primarily designed for undergraduate or masters students. ADSC's internships offer the opportunity to consider a career in research and contribute to an ongoing cutting-edge research project while building professional connections. ADSC interns collaborate closely with a variety of researchers, from on-site ADSC graduate students and postdoctorates to faculty and external collaborators. Many of ADSC's interns become co-authors on project publications and most ADSC undergraduate interns go on to prestigious graduate programs.
Qualifications
Students in:
computer science, electrical engineering or math
For Undergraduates and Masters Students: ADSC is particularly interested in third or fourth year (honors) undergraduates or Masters students from local, as well as overseas, universities. For students from overseas, three-month internships are available under the Singapore International Pre-Graduate Awards (SIPGA) during any part of the year. Interns can earn generous monthly stipends and ADSC assists with airfare, accommodations, bench fees and other allowances.
For Ph.D. Students: Local and overseas Ph.D. students are welcome to apply for internships. International Ph.D. candidates who can be available for longer periods of time can be supported under the A*STAR Research Attachment Programme (ARAP). Under the program, Ph.D. students from overseas universities may spend one to two years at ADSC under joint supervision of ADSC, the A*STAR Research Institute and the students' home university.
To assist, ADSC will apply for internship work permits for its interns who are not Singaporean citizens or permanent residents. To qualify for the permit, students must be enrolled in a degree program at the time that the internship begins.
